Do you hold a qualification from outside the EU?

Check here whether your qualification meets the requirements to study at a German higher education institution.

If your qualification is not sufficient and the admissions database result is general admission to a preparatory course/the Feststellungsprüfung (university qualification exam), you have various options for obtaining entrance – one of them is our online Pre-Year.

Languages

The programme is taught entirely in English and does not require any knowledge of German.

However, learning German gives you an enormous advantage:  German language skills enable you to transfer to a related German-taught degree programme or to continue your studies in Germany, perhaps in a German-taught master's programme. German language skills also give you the opportunity to complete an internship semester in a German company and set yourself apart from other applicants on the local labour market. And, a good knowledge of German will improve your chances of successfully integrating into the labour market of German-speaking countries.

During our online Pre-Year and Bachelor’s programmes, we offer optional German language classes – fully online. Our programmes thus provide you with a bilingual education and make you a bi- or, depending on your native language(s), a multilingual professional.

Programme structure

The Bachelor’s degree programme in Engineering Science at THWS comprises seven semesters in the Fast Track or 13 semesters in the Slow Track (not including the Pre-Year) and offers an interdisciplinary engineering education with a high degree of flexibility.

Foundation Phase (1st–3rd semester in the Fast Track)
During the first three semesters, students build a solid foundation in engineering sciences, including mathematics, physics, IT and programming, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and industrial engineering. Teaching takes place through lectures and interactive exercises, complemented by practical projects and modern digital learning methods. This phase prepares students for the subsequent specialisation stage.

Specialisation Phase (4th–5th semester in the Fast Track)
From the fourth semester onwards, students can either specialise within the online programme or transfer to a German- or English-taught on-campus degree programme, with full recognition of previously completed modules. The first specialisation that can be completed entirely online is Industrial and Systems Engineering, with a focus on production systems and process optimisation.

Internship Semester (6th Semester in the Fast Track)
The sixth semester is dedicated to a mandatory internship. Students apply their theoretical knowledge in a company or research institution, gain valuable practical experience, and establish early professional contacts. THWS maintains close partnerships with numerous national and international companies.

Final Phase (7th Semester in the Fast Track)
In the final semester, students complete their Bachelor’s thesis, addressing a real-world engineering problem. This phase enables students to consolidate their knowledge and prepares them for their future professional careers.

Individual Study Pathways

The Bachelor’s programme in Engineering Science allows students to tailor their studies to their individual goals. From the fourth semester onwards (Fast Track), students may continue specialising online or transition to on-campus studies. The Industrial and Systems Engineering specialisation is offered fully online and focuses on production systems and process optimisation. Other specialisations require a switch to a German- or English-taught on-site programme at THWS.

The Slow Track follows the same programme structure, with the content spread across 13 semesters.

Frequently asked questions

Our online degree programmes are a form of distance learning. Unlike many traditional online programmes, however, our hosted programmes offer direct interaction with professors and fellow students in a fully online environment. Courses are structured in semesters and combine weekly synchronous and asynchronous sessions, providing both flexibility and clear academic guidance.

You will study as part of an online cohort and progress together with other students. In the joint programmes offered with THWS, you benefit from:

  • Experience: GJU and THWS together bring more than 70 years of experience in supporting student success.
  • Quality: All programmes meet high academic standards and apply modern teaching and learning concepts.
  • Practice orientation: The curriculum is designed to prepare you effectively for professional practice.

Accreditation is a quality assurance process that evaluates degree programmes, including their content, structure, and academic processes. As a German state-recognised university, THWS meets strict quality standards. All of its programmes—both on-campus and online—are subject to initial accreditation and regular re-accreditation.

If you hold a qualification from outside the EU, you can check whether it qualifies you for admission to a German higher education institution using the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) admission database.

If your qualification leads to admission to a preparatory course or the Feststellungsprüfung (university entrance qualification exam), there are several pathways to obtain the required qualification—one of them is the our online Pre-Year.

More about prerequisites

With the exception of the Pre-Year, you can choose between our Fast Track (7 semesters) and our Slow Track (13 semesters). You may exceed the standard period of study for either. You may also switch between tracks if your circumstances change and you have less or more time at your disposal. Please note, however, that there are deadlines for taking examinations and that the number of permitted exam retakes is limited.

More about the course structure

You should use a computer or laptop that is no more than five years old, along with a stable internet connection.

The workload is comparable to that of an on-campus programme. The key advantage is flexibility: you decide when and where to study, save travel time, and avoid idle periods between classes. You can choose between our Fast Track, which corresponds to a full-time programme, and our Slow Track, which distributes the contens across 13 semesters and is perfect for students with other responsibilities – professional responsibilities, family, health issues etc.

All learning materials are made available through the GJU and THWS learning management systems.

Yes. The entire programme, including all examinations, can be completed fully online.

We value transparency. Tuition fees are charged per semester and include examinations.

For the Pre-Year, you are enrolled at GJU and thus pay tuition fees to GJU.
The fees due for the Pre-Year are as follows:

  • JOD 1,500 for the first semester
  • JOD 1,500 for the second semester
  • JOD 750 for the summer semester

For the degree programme, you are enrolled at THWS and thus pay tuition fees to THWS.

For non-EU citizens, the fee is EUR 1,500 per semester, covering media fees, student services, study fees, and service fees. Costs for health insurance are not included. For EU citizens, the fee is EUR 600 per semester.

The Online Pre-Year comprises a workload of 60 ECTS per academic year and consists of fully digital modules offered by GJU or newly developed for the programme. Upon successful completion, you obtain a university entrance qualification for the Engineering Science (B.Eng.) programme.

Participants are enrolled as GJU students. All courses—including laboratory components—are delivered online, with no physical attendance required. The teaching format combines mainly asynchronous core courses with weekly synchronous sessions during the lecture period. All assessments, including exams, are conducted online.

More about the Pre-Year

German courses are offered by GJU’s German Language Center (GLC) and are taught live online. To accommodate different time zones, two time slots are available. The programme consists of six courses, from level A1.1 to B2.2, completed over two years. Each course costs JOD 450, excluding coursebooks. Registration is organised through GJU and is possible only after admission to the Pre-Year or a degree programme.
