Do you hold a qualification from outside the EU?

Check here whether your qualification meets the requirements to study at a German higher education institution.

If your qualification is not sufficient and the admissions database result is general admission to a preparatory course/the Feststellungsprüfung (university qualification exam), you have various options for obtaining entrance – one of them is our online Pre-Year.

Languages

The programme is taught entirely in English and does not require any knowledge of German.

However, learning German gives you an enormous advantage:  German language skills enable you to transfer to a related German-taught degree programme or to continue your studies in Germany, perhaps in a German-taught master's programme. German language skills also give you the opportunity to complete an internship semester in a German company and set yourself apart from other applicants on the local labour market. And, a good knowledge of German will improve your chances of successfully integrating into the labour market of German-speaking countries.

During our online Pre-Year and Bachelor’s programmes, we offer optional German language classes – fully online. Our programmes thus provide you with a bilingual education and make you a bi- or, depending on your native language(s), a multilingual professional.

Programme structure

The Bachelor’s degree programme in Health and Environmental Psychology at THWS comprises seven semesters in the Fast Track or 13 semesters in the Slow Track (not including the Pre-Year) and offers an interdisciplinary education with a high degree of flexibility.

The programme combines a strong theoretical foundation, practical application, and future-oriented topics with a clear international focus. You will study the fundamentals of human behaviour, including social, developmental, and biological psychology. In addition, you will explore how psychological factors influence health and illness and how to design effective, health-promoting interventions.

Environmental psychology highlights the relationship between people and their environment, with the aim of promoting well-being and sustainable behaviour. Throughout the programme, you will develop practical skills in counselling, behavioural analysis, and intervention, while also gaining interdisciplinary insights into current societal challenges. A strong emphasis is placed on academic research: you will learn how to plan research projects, analyse data, and apply psychological findings in health- and environment-related contexts.

Foundation phase (1st to 4th semester in the Fast Track)
During the first four semesters, you will build a solid foundation in psychology. You will engage with key theories, models, and methods and study core topics such as perception, learning, emotion, motivation, and social interaction. Health and environmental psychology are integrated from the beginning. This phase is complemented by methodological training in academic writing, research methods, statistics, and diagnostics. You will also begin to develop practical competencies in communication, counselling, behavioural analysis, and intervention.

Internship semester (5th semester in the Fast Track)
In the fifth semester, you will complete a compulsory internship and gain valuable professional experience. Whether in health promotion, environmental consulting, research, or the public sector, you will apply your knowledge in real-world settings, deepen your expertise, and build important professional networks. You also have the opportunity to complete your internship abroad and gain international experience.

Specialisation (6th and 7th semester in the Fast Track)
In the final two semesters, you will specialise in selected areas of health and environmental psychology. Through application-oriented courses and projects, you will deepen your subject knowledge and engage with advanced research topics. The programme concludes with your bachelor’s thesis, in which you independently work on a topic of your choice and demonstrate your analytical and research skills.

Online studies at THWS are characterised by a strong practice orientation and the integrated internship semester in the fifth semester, which is completed in a company or a suitable institution. This allows you to apply the knowledge gained during your online studies directly in a professional work environment.

The Slow Track follows the same programme structure, with the content spread across 13 semesters and the internship semester taking place at the end of your studies.
