Located in the heart of Bavaria, Schweinfurt combines a rich historical heritage with a modern and thriving community. Some of the world's leading companies operating also from Schweinfurt include Bosch-Rexroth AG, Schaeffler Gruppe, Horton Europe GmbH, SKF Sachs AG, SRAM Germany GmbH and Fresenius Medical Care among others. 

While Schweinfurt is therefore commonly associated only with its industrial identity, it has undergone a remarkable transformation, becoming a modern, multicultural, and highly liveable city. Study at THWS in Schweinfurt

The THWS is one of the largest universities of applied sciences in Bavaria. The university has two campuses in the north of Bavaria, in the cities of Würzburg and Schweinfurt. If you are studying the Bachelor in Hydrogen Engineering you will transfer to the THWS campus in the modern and pioneer industrial city of Schweinfurt. 

Students of the hosted programme Hydrogen Engineering Transnational will mainly attend their classes in the complex located at Ignaz-Schön-Straße 11. One of the student canteens is located in that same complex. There, students from all educational institutions can get their meals (adaptable to various diets) for reduced prices. Hosted Programme students will share the campus with other students from programmes of Applied Natural Sciences and Humanities and other Engineering faculties. 

The campus hosts all the classes and laboratories where you will be able to put into practice all what you have learned during your academic journey. There are also many green spaces where you can read, relax with your friends or meet new people. The campus also counts with many study area and the library, where you can borrow the materials you need and find quiet spots to study and prepare for your classes.

Main attractions

Discover Schweinfurt's beauty and fascinating sights to make the most of your time in the city. Take a stroll through the town centre and enjoy a drink in one of the many cafés. Take the opportunity to admire the town hall and its impressive Renaissance architecture right at the market square. Also in the centre is the historic St. Johannis Church, known for its Gothic architecture and beautiful interior. You can also enjoy nature in the city by visiting the Wildpark an den Eichen, a wildlife park where you can see local animals in a natural environment. You can also spend time with friends or on your own by walking through the other city parks, having a picnic, playing games or reading. You can also use your time in the city to visit the various museums, such as the Schweinfurt Industrial Museum, which offers an insight into the city's industrial history, or the Otto Schäfer Museum, which houses an extensive collection of rare books, manuscripts and art. Art lovers can enjoy a variety of exhibitions at the Kunsthalle Schweinfurt or the City Gallery. You can also enjoy a performance at in the theatre.

In summer, you can soak up the sun and cool off with a swim in the Baggersee lake, where there are also barbecue areas. During the summer, Schweinfurt hosts different festivals as the Schweinfurter Hafensommer, which takes place on the Maininsel and features open-air concerts, theatre performances and other events, and the Volksfest in June, a great opportunity to experience Bavarian culture and meet the locals. Throughout the rest of the year, there are other events taking place in the town, such as the Wine Festival, which usually includes vineyard tours and live music, and the town fair in August, with live music, food stalls and lots of activities. In winter, of course, you can experience the magic of the holiday season at the city's Christmas Market, where you can try seasonal treats and admire handmade crafts. 

Leisure activities in Schweinfurt

Schweinfurt, with its mix of industrial and modern sites and historical charm, offers international students a wide range of leisure activities. For those who want to immerse themselves in the local culture, the city's museums and exhibitions, theatres and cinemas offer many opportunities to explore. You can also take a walk through the city park, offering nice settings to have picnics, chill out, play games with friends or reading. You can also use your time in the city to engage with the local community by participating in the cultural events or in the language exchange programmes to get even more fluent in German!

Students can also take part in the lively social scene, with many cafés and bars in the old town. In addition, the proximity of the Franconian wine region provides an excellent opportunity for vineyard tours. 

Schweinfurt is also a very sports-oriented city, so there are plenty of opportunities to exercise in one of the 70 sports clubs or at the university facilities. The city hosts modern sports facilities, and students can choose from a really wide range of sports like swimming, soccer, basketball or ice skating, among many others. There are also plenty of opportunities for hiking and cycling in the surrounding area.
