For your success

As a full-time programme, the Social Work programme comprises a standard study period of seven semesters, including an international internship semester. For those students who need to qualify for the programme by completing the pre-year, its two semesters will be fully accredited towards the first two semesters of the degree programme and will not extend their study time.

The first four semesters will be taught by GJU and THWS lecturers at GJU in Jordan. The last three semesters will be taught solely by THWS in Germany. Students will receive intensive German language and intercultural training to prepare them for a successful stay abroad.

Based on the German model of applied sciences, students will get hands-on experience through practice projects, field trips and internships in Jordan and Germany. Employability is at the heart of the curriculum, bridging any potential gap between academia and the professional field.

Social work is a highly interdisciplinary field and the study programme consists of courses like: psychology, law, ethics, health, social care management, sociology, pedagogics, statistics, research methods and philosophy of science, communication and counselling skills, and many other courses directly related to the history, methods and theories of social work.

In the pre-year respectively the first two semesters of the degree programme, mainly fundamental subjects are taught. Students learn about the local Jordanian context of Social Work and its international dimension. This lays the basis for successfully completing the advanced courses of the higher semesters.

The THWS programme is known in the German community for its focus on behavioural oriented, evidence-based social work, thus connecting it very well to the Anglo-Saxon traditions of social work. Qualitative and quantitative research methods including statistics, a research seminar, term papers and finally the bachelor thesis ensure that graduates are truly prepared to make a difference in the lives of their service receivers.

In the 6th semester, students have the opportunity to write the mentioned bachelor's thesis on a real-life challenge from the praxis field, ideally in collaboration with a social welfare institution. This allows students to build on the theoretical and practical skills they have acquired and to gain a deeper insight into current research and professional topics. It is also a further opportunity to prove themselves in the eyes of a potential future employer.

In the final 7th semester, students conduct an internship in a public or private social welfare organisation in Germany. They will gain experience in professional practice and establish their first professional contacts and networks.

Students are now ready and well-prepared for the job market. Immediately after graduation, they can kick-start their personal professional career.
